The idea behind Pill Fairy is to bring together electronic prescriptions and medication regimens with the goal of digitizing and automating today’s manual processes that take place between patients, physicians, pharmacists and insurance companies.

The design of the Pill Fairy service is consistently based on the key concept of distributed data management. This means that patients retain control of all their sensitive data – not just in theory, but in a verifiable manner.

A sophisticated security concept embedded in a flexible identity infrastructure prevents fraud and ensures reliable authentication and the ability to verify all stakeholders and documents. The key component is a private block chain to be operated by interested stakeholders (such as insurance companies) as a consortium.

Pill Fairy brings reliability and confidence to medication, while providing comfort and new application scenarios to patients. End-to-end digitization promises to deliver enormous cost savings to the insurance industry.

The Pill Fairy service is helping to make networked medicine happen. Blockchain technology is used to prevent fraud, ensure privacy and data security and implement strong authentication based on trustworthy digital identities.

Blockchain-based solution for cross-border claims settlement

As part of a PoC (proof of concept) developed for the client, a private Etherum blockchain was used to automate the reporting and billing processes for motor vehicle claims settlement. The solution even works across national borders. For instance, a person insured with a French insurance company reports an incident during a stay in Italy. The claim notification is received by the Italian branch of the insurer. Notification and invoice payment are mapped using blockchain technology. This is an example of how verifiable transactions can simplify cross-organizational clearing procedures.

A major regional energy supplier and electricity network operator commissioned metafinanz to investigate new business opportunities in the field of cooperative energy management in the context of blockchain technology and to assess their practical suitability. The company finally decided on an infrastructure based on local power exchange. metafinanz developed the matching concept, user stories, business architecture and alternative business models. We also built a prototype app, down to the visual design, for the administration and visualization of a marketplace.

A large international company wanted to offer its customers the option of settling outstanding invoice balances via Bitcoin in addition to common payment methods such as bank transfer. The use of crypto currencies facilitates rapid and low-cost handling of transactions, making them particularly attractive for use in countries where expensive or cumbersome banking procedures are the norm.

The goal of the implementation project was to create a solution for accepting Bitcoin payments conveniently and cost effectively via a third-party provider and to allocate payments to the right end customer. Another requirement was to directly convert incoming Bitcoin payments into conventional currencies and transfer these to a corporate account.

B3i started off in 2016 as a consortium of 15 insurance and reinsurance companies with the vision of leveraging blockchain technology for the benefit of all stakeholders along the value chain. In 2017, the first use cases based on real smart contracts, but populated with fictitious data, were presented to the public. As a member of the B3i development team, metafinanz helped design the architecture, performed organizational tasks and was in charge of Scrum mastering. We also developed part of the software and built the development and production infrastructure (DevOps).

A customer from the insurance industry was interested in blockchain technology when it was still in its infancy – metafinanz assisted them. The focus was on highly specialized reinsurance contracts, so-called catastrophe excess of loss (Cat-XL) cases. We implemented these by creating prototypes on the Ethereum, Monax and Hyperledger Fabric platforms. Our main tasks included the evaluation of these blockchain technologies to assess their practical viability, performance, usability, scalability, integration into enterprise infrastructures, and maintainability of the code.

Being made aware of new services or products and receiving reminders when visiting a website – these are the kinds of things we are used from the retail sector. Insurance company websites, on the other hand, are rarely viewed at all. As a consequence, this industry can only gather small amounts of data for analysis. Therefore, generic analytics models are of little use here. Instead, we developed customized advanced analytics models to be used alongside rule sets.

The customer challenge: The company wanted a system that immediately recommends suitable products or services to interested parties who are visiting their website for the first time.
When visitors are offline, our customer’s service can track events from any input sources, group them into sessions and create user profiles. A process-, rule- and model-based recommendation engine then generates recommendations in real time (“Next Best Action” / “Next Best Offer”). A dashboard provides an at-a-glance overview of the reports and helps to perform quality assessments.

metafinanz assisted the customer in the architectural design of the new service and helped implement it – including the development of a machine learning module and the creation of a DevOps infrastructure.

An asset management company is getting ready to move into the future. It is building a new platform to offer customers a highly automated service. The focus is on private investors.

The automated customer journey begins with a catalog of questions, after which the customer is recommended an optimal investment strategy. This takes into account various parameters such as risk affinity, investment horizon, investment volume and family circumstances. Interested clients are identified via a video identification procedure in keeping with the Money Laundering Act and are provided with a custodial account at the asset manager’s partner bank.

The Camunda workflow engine is the core component driving this process. It contains analytics models as well as other functions and can link up with an internal corporate registration backend. If processes change or additional analytics models are added, adjustments can be made easily without changing existing code.

Sitting idly by as cyber risks grow ever more threatening was not an option for our client, an industrial supplier. Using the metaRisk dialog, we first identified the different levels of risk and evaluated the status of existing safety measures. This comprehensive risk assessment enabled the company to clearly see its risks, assess them realistically and plan steps to mitigate risk.

metafinanz helped an international credit insurance company to reduce the number of SAP licenses used worldwide, resulting in substantial cost savings.

The license volume had grown over the years, and nobody in the company had an overview of the licensing situation. We performed a targeted analysis of the existing identities to determine who actually carries out tasks for our customer in the relevant areas. Reconciling the findings with the central Active Directory then made it possible to identify the employees who actively use an SAP license. Based on this information, our customer was able to reduce the number of licenses from 230 to 18.

Our customer was looking for a way to manage customer requirements in real time. The insurance company wanted to use this capability to offer a complex range of products in a needs-based manner. The goal was to upgrade the web portal to facilitate a personalized and efficient presentation to potential customers based on analytical prediction models.

metafinanz supported the customer in setting up the appropriate infrastructure and implemented the personalized presentation based on a clickstream analysis. This has provided the insurer with the ability to select the advertising banners and content shown to any particular visitor in real time. The city of Königsbrunn wanted to create an incentive for young people to visit public institutions more often. In addition to addressing young people, the city was looking for a way to motivate all fellow citizens to participate more in city life and get involved in the cultural development of Königsbrunn. On the occasion of the city’s 50th anniversary, the municipal administration wanted to develop a Pokémon Go app to capitalize on the widespread enthusiasm at the time.

However, it took metafinanz only a few days to convince the customer that simply copying a hype is no guarantee for getting the desired results. Based on the Google Design Sprint framework, we performed a complete research, ideation, prototyping and testing cycle at the end customer in only five days. At the end of the sprint week, a comprehensive marketing strategy with 20 creative ideas, both digital and analog, had been developed for the city.

The Pet Tracker: Quo Vadis?

Our pets are dear to us. And it’s a good thing that there are insurance services for animals. But what can pet owners do to prevent their little furry friends from taking harm in the first place? A customer came up with the idea of a pet tracker for just this purpose. The product would combine a GPS collar with an app, allowing owners to locate their pet in case of an emergency.

metafinanz evaluated this business idea together with the client. First, the business idea was put down in concrete terms using the Business Model Canvas to create a better understanding of the idea and visualize it. Based on this, we devised experiments to test the idea with the target group. We held a raffle in selected Facebook groups to find suitable candidates. Next, our experts held qualitative interviews to determine the pet owners’ product expectations. In a joint workshop with our client, we then developed a pricing model and tested the willingness of the target group to pay these prices.

While the pet owners were generally very interested in the idea, they were not willing to pay an adequate price. This concluded the evaluation of the business idea – and our findings sadly put an end to the customer’s idea, but saved them from spending a lot of money on a product certain to fail. metafinanz helped make the risk transparent and prevent the customer from sinking any more money in further developing this business idea.
